North Routt's Changeover Week: Where the Road Ends and the Ski Track Begins

Up County Road 129, winter doesn't arrive all at once. A handful of operators each reach their own date, and most of those dates fall within a few days of each other. In the last week of October, the road to the Pearl Lake yurts closes for snow. On Sunday, November 1, Steamboat Lake State Park ends its fall camping window and opens its winter sites. The Steamboat Lake Outpost has served its last restaurant meal of the season and is now advertising snowmobile tours. Most North Routt places stay open through winter, and what changes is how you reach them. A place you drove to in September becomes one you ski, snowshoe or sled into by mid-November.

The Pearl Lake Road Goes First

The first wheels-to-skis switch comes at Pearl Lake State Park. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says the access road to the park's two yurts closes because of snow "from the last week in October until Memorial Day." That puts the closure in the final days of this month. After it, getting to the yurts means skiing or snowshoeing roughly half a mile, and the yurts have no drinking water through the winter months.

The yurts stay in service. CPW's Pearl Lake camping page says they can be reserved year-round with a two-night minimum, and each has electric heat and power. A single yurt sleeps up to six and costs $90 a night. Yurt 16 is the only one that allows pets, at $10 per night rather than per pet. CPW describes winter there as "an exceptionally remote experience," reachable only "by snowshoe, ski or snowmobile."

Pearl Lake's 36 campsites close for the winter. CPW sends winter campers a few miles over to Steamboat Lake instead.

Sunday Is Steamboat Lake's Switch

Steamboat Lake has been running a fall arrangement since October 1. Every campsite is reservation-only, and you can book only for the same day. CPW's own example is that a stay on October 3 can't be booked before October 3. Two loops in the Dutch Hill Campground stay open through this window. The Wheeler Loop has electric sites at $39.57 a night, and Bridge Island has non-electric sites at $28. Same-day booking can happen at the visitor center, which is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during this period, or online through CPWShop. Free Wi-Fi is available by the visitor center for that.

The fall window runs through November 1. On that date, according to the Steamboat Lake camping page, eight winter sites in the marina parking lot become available by reservation, and they stay available until the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. They have electric outlets and nothing else, and they aren't meant for tents. For the whole winter, the park's 181 campsites come down to eight self-contained spots on pavement.

Once snow covers the ground, the park's trails take over. CPW lists a groomed ski-touring trail of 4.2 miles that's closed to motors and a groomed multiple-use access trail of 5 miles. Winter visitors to Steamboat Lake mostly show up on those groomed trails, not in the campground loops.

The Kitchens Shift Into Mud Season

The same week changes how people eat up-valley. On its Instagram feed, the Steamboat Lake Outpost announced the "last weekend to enjoy the Outpost restaurant for the season," with chili, burgers, pizza and ice cream. Hours for that final stretch were 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. An open mic ran that Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Newer posts in the same feed cover first rifle season, with last-minute hunting gear in the Outpost general store and "select lodging still open for limited October dates," and then a first-snow photo over the cabins.

With the restaurant closed, the Outpost's winter business is built around machines. Its winter activities page lists daily two-hour guided snowmobile tours at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., plus full-day rentals that pick up at 8:30 a.m. and come back at 4:30 p.m. At the Outpost, the season change means the menu gives way to sled rentals.

Farther down the road in Clark, Tavern at the Glen is running "Mud Season Specials." Its event listings, dated October 19 and October 22, 2026, promise "tasty deal, all day, every day." The tavern is staying open through the gap with deals, and the specials run during the same weeks the Outpost kitchen is dark.

Where the Wheels Stop for the Season

The trailheads change over too. The U.S. Forest Service lists Seedhouse Campground's season as early-to-mid June through mid-October, and the agency updated that page on October 9, 2026. The Seedhouse Trailhead itself sits about 9½ miles up Seedhouse Road, Forest Road 400.

Some trailheads are built for winter. The Forest Service describes Elkhorn South as a trailhead for winter motorized use with trailer parking. The road and the lot are plowed, four-wheel or all-wheel drive is recommended, and the agency says wheeled access ends there. Elkhorn South is a clear example of the season's pattern. In winter, a trailhead lot is where the drive ends and the trip on skis or a sled begins.

Past that point, a local club does most of the work. North Routt Snow Riders says it manages winter access in North Routt and grooms more than 100 miles of trail for both motorized and non-motorized users, under a special-use permit from the Forest Service. The club's winter map marks designated motorized routes separately from ski and snowshoe trails. Routt Powder Riders is a separate club. It grooms its own 100-plus miles closer to Steamboat, between Buffalo Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass.

Snow decides when grooming starts. Last winter, North Routt Snow Riders canceled its Poker Run, which had been set for March 14, 2026. The club cited early-spring conditions and not enough snow below 9,000 feet. The yurt road and the marina sites follow fixed calendar dates, and conditions on the groomed network depend on how much snow falls.

Colorado's snowmobile registration year has already turned over. Colorado Parks and Wildlife requires an annual registration for snowmobiles used on public lands or trails. The registration year runs October 1 through September 30, so the current registration year began October 1, ahead of this month's closures. Nonresidents need a permit. This is general information, not legal advice, and CPW's page is the place to confirm what applies to your own machine.

In order, the changeover up CR 129 looks like this:

  1. Mid-October. Seedhouse Campground's posted season ends.
  2. October 19 onward. Mud Season Specials begin at Tavern at the Glen, and the Steamboat Lake Outpost restaurant has already closed for the season.
  3. Last week of October. The road to the Pearl Lake yurts closes for snow, and the half-mile on skis or snowshoes starts.
  4. November 1. Steamboat Lake's same-day fall camping window ends, and its eight winter sites in the marina lot open for reservations.
  5. Through the winter. Grooming on the North Routt Snow Riders network depends on snowfall, and the Outpost lists daily guided snowmobile tours and full-day rentals on its winter schedule.

What Stays Open Straight Through

Some places in the valley don't have a changeover date at all. Historic Columbine runs its cabins year-round, with 14 cabins, a lodge and a general store on the property. In winter the property packs a one-mile cross-country and snowshoe loop with its own snowcat and keeps motors off it. For winter arrivals, Columbine's FAQ says a map by the general store door shows guests how to find their cabin.

Vista Verde Ranch has already set its winter calendar. Holiday stays are December 20–27 and December 27–January 3. Adults-only winter stays run January 5 through February 14, and family stays run February 15 through March 21.

The next fixed date for the whole valley is down in town. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club lists the 114th Winter Carnival for February 2–7, 2027, and says the detailed schedule will be posted in December 2026.
